But times are changing. Type the words #hairypits on Instagram and you will find 55,000 images and multiple accounts dedicated to women encouraging a more natural look. And, increasingly, brands are promoting body hair as well. Creative director Demna Gvasalia of Vetements launched his SS19 campaign with an Instagram image of a model with a full armpit of dark tufty hair, while hairy legs were a regular feature at the runway shows in September.

Swedish brand Weekday have been hairy supporters since they launched in 2002, and regularly post images of models with their natural body hair on display. “Body hair is a non-issue for us. People come in different shapes, sizes, skin tones and with or without body hair, freckles, scars, tattoos etc,” says Nadine Schmidt, head of marketing. “The most important thing for us is that we show a diverse, nuanced view of the world because that is the world we live in . . . We feel women need to see images that they can identify with, not just ideals, so we try to work with women we know and not just models.”

A third-year drama student Laura Jackson from Exeter has usurped the month with her inauguralJanuhairy campaign, encouraging women across the globe to put down their razors, lasers and wax strips and simply let their hair grow, wherever it may be. The initiative may only be a few weeks old but Jackson already has women taking part in the UK, US, Canada, Germany, Russia and Spain.

A survey published last year by Chicago-based Advanced Dermatology Group does suggest that society’s notions towards hair removal are changing. Millennials are 55 per cent more likely than previous generations to discuss their body hair with friends. These days, only 18 per cent of women prefer to be hairless, while 56 per cent opt to keep their hair trimmed.

What would her advice be for women who do still want to remove hair? “Laser or shave it,” she says. “Shaving exfoliates the skin: if you use lemon juice, lavender and tea tree oil after shaving, this mixture naturally thins out the hair and lightens it.”
